Here's a scary thought: "The Lord of the Rings" the musical, currently scheduled to open in London in the Spring of 2005.

Here's the press release.

That is right up there with Spamalot, the musical based on Monty Python and the Holy Grail. However, I think Holy Grail will transfer better to the stage than LoTR. That movie had a lot more irreverence and light moments, not to say that LoTR was a 100 percent serious movie, but it seems too heavy to be a musical.

But if Wolverine from X-Men (aka Hugh Jackman) can portray Australia's most successful music export (and the only gay Australian that I know of) and do it somewhat well (reviewers were rather kind to The Boy From Oz) I guess anything is possible.

I could see Spamalot working. Neither Spamalot nor The Lord of the Rings seems as bad to me as the musical Carrie, based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, which ran for 5 performances (May 12-May 15, 1988).
