The first weekend of Valley Light Opera's production of Ruddigore is finished. Things went really well. A few people messed up their lines, but the people who were on stage with them at the covered very well and kept the show going.
On Saturday, the woman playing Mad Margaret had issues with her hat. During her first scene in the second act, when she is supposed to be acting civilized, her hat refused to stay on her head. Of course, it came off for the first time during her line "My hair is combed". Since her hat was attached to her wig, the process of trying to fix the hat made her hair more unruly. The actors tried to keep going, but the hat refused to stay in place, which caused the audience to burst into hysterics. The actors started ad libbing dialog and actions to try to cover their efforts to get the hat to stay in place and did an excellent job of staying in character during the whole sequence.
I also learned how to put on stage makeup at Thursday's dress rehearsal. Even though this is my fourth show with VLO, this year was the first year I had the time to have someone talk me through the process at the level of detail I needed. On Friday, I put my makeup on and only needed to have a few things fixed by the person in charge of makeup. On Saturday, I ended up putting makeup not only on myself, but on other men in the chorus. I had a hard time dealing with the fact that the day after I first put makeup on myself I was considered competent enough to put makeup on other people.
In non-VLO news, I woke up with an upset stomach this morning and have been working from home.
