Dress Rehearsal for Valley Light Opera's production of Ruddigore was yesterday. My second act costume is a suit of armor that was made by our set designer over 10 years ago for VLO's last production of Ruddigore. It consists of several pieces (legs, skirt, neck covering, breastplate, arms, shoulders, gauntlets, and helmet) and weights at least 20 pounds. I need another person's help to get into and out of the armor and it takes about 10-15 minutes to put on. To make the suit of armor more comfortable to wear, he rigged up a belt that I wear to make the weight of the leg pieces rest on my hips instead of the tops of my feet.
Yesterday, at the end of rehearsal, one of the costumers was helping me out of the armor. As she finished unbuckling the legs by undoing the topmost buckle which runs around the top of my inner thigh through the crotch, I noticed that one of the nuts that held the leg pieces to the belt had fallen off and announced loudly "Oh no! I lost a nut!"
