reveilles and I went to Stop & Shop, a local supermarket, today. We bought one item and paid by credit card. For this one item, we got a receipt that is 19 inches long. What could they possibly be compensating for?

Makes sense if you bought something with a rebate, I once bought a cheap MP3 player at Best Buy and got a ream of tape.

There was no rebate on this item.

This is almost like a lateral thinking puzzle. Okay, was it the end of the roll?

Nope. Everyone who buys one item and pays with a credit card gets a receipt about this length.
  • 3.5 inches for the store logo, store address, date, time, and line number
  • 0.5 inches for the item we purchased, which was one sale
  • 1.5 inches to total up the order
  • 2.0 inches to tell us our year-to-date savings
  • 1.5 inches to tell us our status in their gas rewards program, which is not particularly useful since there isn't a nearby Stop & Shop that sells gas
  • 1.5 inches to tell us about a contest we can enter online
  • 1.0 inches to tell us what we can get as part of their gas rewards program
  • 1.8 inches of blank space
  • 0.7 inches to say that the order was paid
  • 5.0 inches to summarize that we paid by credit card, which includes almost 3.0 inches of blank space

If I ran a store, and if the blank space was mechanically necessary, I would not let it go to waste. I mean, print something of import on there, like some Keats with your Hot Pockets or Shelley with your Tide.
