magusjosh, dasubergeek, and I have been looking at 1980s cartoons on You Tube. I decided to share the pain/joy (depending on the show). Here are most of the ones we found:

All I need is the theme from The Facts of Life and I'm eight years old all over again. :)

Watching that smurfs one just isn't the same after that UNICEF PSA came out a year or two ago....

Oh, you are SO not going to start doing this to me!

Okay, my requests are: Punky Brewster, Mr. Belvidere, the robot girl sitcom, Solid Gold, the one where the girl could stop time. I still enjoy watching the Golden Girls, and I fell in love with the show when Estelle Getty sang Purple Rain and I was eight or so.

Who DOESN'T love The Golden Girls??

My late grandma (bless her heart) would let us watch this show with her whenever she would come over and babysit us so we would think she was a "cool" grandma.

Now, when I catch reruns on Lifetime and listen to some of the dialogue (particularly from Blanche) with a more adult mind, I can't help but blush and wonder what in the world was grandma thinking, exposing her only two grandchildren to some of these adult themes?? :)

I also watched this show with my grandmother and I liked being able to watch something with her that made us both laugh, even if I didn't get all the jokes.

Your grandmother, like mine, probably realized (quite wisely) that the adult themes would go flying over our heads and we wouldn't even notice. Which is probably why you were surprised by Blanche's dialogue, because you don't remember it being that raunchy. :)

With horror, I acknowledge that the following shows are familiar:

  • Bionic Six
  • Danger Mouse
  • Duck Tales
  • Get Along Gang (track suit guy! aah!)
  • Gummi Bears
  • He-Man
  • Inspector Gadget
  • Mighty Mouse
  • Real Ghostbusters (wherein Harold Ramis has ROLLED BLONDE HAIR)
  • Rubik the Amazing Cube (gulp!)
  • She-Ra (imagine a romance novelist attempting to write fantasy)
  • Smurfs
  • Snorks
  • Teddy Ruxpin (I *HAD* one! Even the name fills me with inner shivers.)
  • Thundercats
  • Turbo Teen (freaking out inside)
  • Wuzzles (The Island of Dr. Moreau can be fun! And cute!)

And ones you FORGOT (GIRLIE ONES, AAAAAAAHHHH!):

I'd just like to note that jcobleigh is singing along with many of these shows' themes, giggling madly. While I'm trying to work.

It can't be a coincidence that the first reaction for both of us was to scream at the very thought of these.

I am not entirely sorry for warping your brain, because it's really just more of the same... :)

I found the opening for Perfect Strangers, but I couldn't find the other three. I remember Webster and Benson, but I never heard of Jennifer Slept Here.

remember the calculator in the shoulder holster?

(Link)
oh god, i really should not admit to remembering (and watching) this show, but since you brought it up, you receive the majority of the dork karma, right? d-:

i had piano lessons on friday afternoons and thus never was able to watch the final installment of the week's mathnet. it was always disappointing and it seemed like a really big deal at the time.

my other favorite segment was the "oops" sequences wherein someone would forget to carry the 1 in a routine addition and then they would show stock footage of a building collapsing or the tacoma narrows bridge going wonky and flying apart.

Re: remember the calculator in the shoulder holster?

The Friday installments were the best with that math crime fighting team! I remember the woman was named after a day of the week, which I thought was a cool idea.

I was especially excited about what you could do with 9s. Like, 9 * any number = a number where the digits either add up to 9, or the number that the digits add up to is divisible by 9. Knowledge like that is SO TOTALLY COOL.

(and largely useless)

BUT COOL.

It wasn't until late high school that the magic faded a little, when I discovered that any digit that is the highest in a given base has those properties.

BUT IT WAS SO COOL.
